Meadowbrook Press is currently looking for your funniest poems to be considered for our future poetry anthologies. Our primary target audience is children age 6–12. Be sure to read our books or visit our popular children’s poetry Web site www.GigglePoetry.com to get a feel for our style.
A successful poem has an engaging opening line, an entertaining buildup, carefully metered and rhymed lines, and a great punch line. We’re interested in poems that are funny from both a child’s and an adult’s perspective, a bit irreverent, and a little punchy. The most common reason we reject submissions is because they’re cute and clever but not funny. Subjects might include parents, siblings, friends, pets, school, food, disasters, advice, and anything else about the ups and downs of being a kid. We are not interested in whimsical, serious, or sad poems.
Submit your best work only; up to 10 poems per submission. We do not consider poetry collections or picture-book-style stories in verse. Poems are generally 24 lines or shorter due to space limitations. Simultaneous submissions are acceptable. No phone calls, please.
We receive a large volume of submissions each year, making it impractical to respond to each submission. We publish 3–8 poetry books a year with varied themes, so if we feel your submissions may meet a future need, we will keep it on file. In some cases, we may contact you to solicit more poems based on the quality of your submission and how well you master our style.
